Making a hit of old Record building When the going gets tough, the tough go topping. A topping out ceremony has seen the roof sealed on the £30 million Copenhagen building on Hope Street, Glasgow. Scheduled for completion in June 2009, the grade A office scheme will bring 65,000 sq ft of new space to the city centre.
Located opposite Central Station, the Copenhagen Building will extend to ten floors, with floorplates of around 6500 sq ft. The development fuses two original 1899 buildings, part of which was once the Daily Record’s printing hall.
The ‘Copenhagen’ title was chosen to commemorate the the southern stretch of Hope Street, which was originally called ‘Copenhagen Street’ in celebration of the horse ridden by the Duke of Wellington at the battle of Waterloo. Rob Hill of the Hugh Mackay Retirement Benefit Scheme, which is developing the site,
said: “This is our first investment in Glasgow, which is one the most exciting business centres in the UK and with a growing international profile. We are on track to open in June next year and look forward to becoming a significant player in the central business district.” The topping out was performed by Councillor Frank Docherty,
convener for development and regeneration on Glasgow City Council, who said: “The Copenhagen Building will be a major asset to the city when it opens next year. It also marks another major step in the regeneration of the strategically important International Financial Services District.”
