Glasgow's £30m Copenhagen Building Tops Out
Glasgow has received a major boost in advance of 2009 with the topping out of the £30m Copenhagen building on Hope Street in the heart of the city's international financial services district (IFSD).

The development team for the building consists of Chard Construction, Gordon Murray and Alan Dunlop Architects, Rex Procter & Partners and joint letting agents Colliers CRE and Knight Frank.

The new Grade A office development, which will open for business in June next year, will bring 65,000 sq ft of high quality office space to the heart of the city centre. When complete and fully occupied, The Copenhagen Building is expected to accommodate in excess of 500 office staff. 100 jobs have been created during construction.

Located opposite Central Station and at the junction of major public transport networks, it will add to the regeneration of the city centre south zone, where the recently-announced 6 star 26-storey Jumeirah Glasgow Hotel will open on Argyle Street in 2011.

When complete, the Copenhagen Building will extend to ten floors, with circa 6500 sq ft floor plates, a modern glass curtain wall and two-storey atrium. The new building fuses the original 1899 JJ Burnett and Andrew Thomson designed building with the adjacent Category B building designed by Robert Thomson, also built in 1899. Developers expect to achieve a high BREAM rating, an environmental standard which will appeal to the growing number of occupiers specifying sustainable, highly energy-efficient buildings.

Councillor Purcell, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "The building will be a major asset to the city when it opens next year. It also marks another major step in the regeneration of the strategically important International Financial Services District.

"We are delighted that the developers have made this investment in Glasgow, and are breathing new life into such a historically important building. Glasgow City Council wishes the building and its future occupiers every success."

Rob Hill of the Hugh Mackay Retirement Benefit Scheme, which is developing the site, said: "This is our first investment in Glasgow, which is one the most exciting business centres in the UK and with a growing international profile."
